What is Faith?

What does faith look like in everyday life? Solomon helps our imaginations in Proverbs 21:31:

“A horse is prepared for the day of battle, but victory comes from the Lord.”

In this depiction of faith, we see both human and divine responsibility. Our Responsibility: Faithful Obedience. God’s Responsibility: Outcomes.

Faith isn’t passive, nor is it coercive. Faith is bringing to bear our heart, gifts, and effort, but trusting the outcomes of life to a wise, sovereign, and loving Father. It is working diligently on your resume and networking with intentionality, but ultimately trusting God for the new job. It is engaging your kids in the church and striving to model discipleship at home, but ultimately trusting your child’s salvation to Jesus’ capable hands. It’s praying for change in your friends heart, but knowing ultimate transformation comes from above.

Faith includes preparation, work, and planning on our part – but it also includes trust and resting our hopes and dreams in our Heavenly Father’s hands.
